1) First of all, I am an American ass far as race goes. But I have ancestors from Ireland, Croatia, Germany, Italy, and more, but the rest are unknown because my great grandfather was an orphan, so we don’t know where he came from. I was raised to follow the Catholic religion. And I stay pretty current in the Bay Area culture.

2) I always spend holidays with all my local family, which usually includes a huge meal.

3) I don’t make too big of a deal of my ethnicity or religion because I’m a mutt of sorts, so it’s hard for me to relate to a certain culture because I’ve been influenced by so many while growing up.

4) a) The Latino population includes 44 million people in our country, based on estimates made by the government in 2007. This shows that Latinos are being accepted into our culture more-so now than ever.
b) It is believed that Hispanics will make up a quarter of the population in 50 years. This is expected to make Hispanics a more influential force in our country.
c) Some Hispanics changed their names or stopped speaking Spanish in hopes of avoiding being discriminated against.
d) They feel they should be free to express their own culture instead of being forced to hide it.
e) The Hispanic culture is being reinforced more-so than other cultures because its countries of origin are much closer and they often visit back to them, which keeps their culture more intact than most other ethnicities.
f) It’s hard to define what it means to be Hispanic because the term “Hispanic” is used to define multiple cultures from Mexico-down on the map.
g) George Bush and Al Gore are learning Spanish because they realize that a large portion of the population still speaks Spanish as a primary language.
h) Large families will be more affected by this because the parents may not be able to afford the best education for their kids because they can’t get a decent wage.
i) Some Hispanic leaders feel “invisible” because the media doesn’t portray Hispanic culture as much as they’d like.
j) Non-Hispanic culture has influenced Hispanic culture by introducing the youngsters of the Hispanic culture to the American culture, and most of the kids decide to blend both cultures together. The Hispanic culture has influenced the non-Hispanic culture in the fact that most jobs choose someone who is fluent in Spanish and English instead of one that just knows English.
k) “Cultural affirmation” means that the Hispanic culture is being accepted by the American population.
l) If they were viewed as “Latin, they would most likely be discriminated against.
m) It is affirmed whenever they visit their relatively close land of origin, but it is diluted because they live in a different country and are exposed to an entirely different culture.
n) Some parents are afraid of their kids becoming “Americanized” because they feel that their heritage gets lost when that happens. When parents were protecting their children from being too Latin, they were covering up their heritage.
o) There is no “o”.
p) The Chicano movement grew out of assimilation because3 heir parents were trying to hide their Hispanic heritage.
q) Increased integration will bring about educational and economic equality. I say that because it has worked for every other race to arrive to America.
r) Some people might see losing their heritage as the cost of integration.
s) Mexican food is huge in America, there are at least 20 taquerias in Watsonville, and the rest of the country is covered with Taco Bells. Being Fluent in the Spanish language looks great on any resume.
